Phytonutrients (Whole Food) Compared to Supplements

A recent study in Nature has demonstrated that vitaments and minerals
exist in a matrix and complimentary relationship with others in whole
foods. It has demonstrated that nutrients that are isolated or worse,
synthasized will not do any good. In a whole food, all the nutrients
that are necessary for assimilation of the food is present. When taken
out of this enviroment, they do not perform as well.
A phytonutrient is a whole food supplement that takes a whole, organic food, such as carrots, and remove the water without disrupting the vital complimentary and nutrient configuration.
The U.S. Dept of Agriculture states:
" Phytonutrients may:
-
serve as antioxidants
-
enhance immune response
-
enhance cell-to-cell communication
-
alter estrogen metabolism
-
convert to vitamin A (beta-carotene is metabolized to vitamin A)
-
cause cancer cells to die (apoptosis)
-
repair DNA damage caused by smoking and other toxic exposures
-
detoxify carcinogens through the activation of the cytocrome P450 and Phase II enzyme systems."

DHA is found as an omega-3 fatty acid, and has been well noted to assist with heart-health. Recently, researches have linked higher intakes to reduced risk Alzheimers and the cognitive decline that follows its onset. Published in the "Archives of Neurology"; they found that people over the age of 65, who ate at least one DHA-rich fish meal per week had 60% less risk of Alzheimer's.
DHA makes up most of the cell membranes in our brain. Some research suggests that 200mg of DHA per day (3 times what the average American takes in), may have many benefits.
